Layering a Leather Jacket + Coated Denim

I don’t know if I have the nerve for leather on leather, but leather with coated denim-sure!  Especially when the edginess is broken up with super soft cashmere and a denim shirt.  Not that I’m shy about going more edgy!  I actually feel more comfortable going that route than preppy, so this was my way of mixing in a little preppiness and still feeling like me.  I’m sure some people might wonder where the preppiness is, but for me…a button up denim shirt that’s not a “jacket” with a cashmere scarf = preppy.  It’s about as far as I can go in my comfort zone.  Preppy is one of those styles I LOVE to look at, but don’t feel comfortable wearing.  I’m sure we ALL can relate (in one form of fashion!)  Maybe it’s all my years in corporate banking that I never really felt comfortable in…hmmm…

I took these really quick one day while Maya was in school, so another “just me” post, which feels so weird.Blog Doma Leather J Crew Gap DL1961 River Checkered Vans-1 Blog Doma Leather J Crew Gap DL1961 River Checkered Vans-2I took these before I had discovered my shutter release and was trying to capture a walking shot with the self timer.  It didn’t go as planned 😉 Blog Doma Leather J Crew Gap DL1961 River Checkered Vans-3I had this thought that if I actually did my hair and Maya wasn’t with me, I might try and take a “head shot” for myself.

It was cold, and I felt like a total nerd by myself, so…GET IT DONE (love looking back on my camera’s time stamp)!
But, totally a keeping it real for people that think it takes a ton of time to do this.  YES, it does if you don’t have a process or want a LOT of variety, BUT…it can be done quickly.  If you are alone.  Throw a child into the mix, and anything goes… 😉

Long Layers + Ripped Skinnies on the beach | A Favorite!

Again, I struggle!!!  What to title the post… If only I had time to really THINK!  Yet, I do not.  So, here we go. I noted that it was one of my favorites, because I didn’t want it to get lost in the shuffle, and…it’s one of my favorites!

Long layers.

It’s an easy out when you are feeling not so great (HELLO Holidays!! ;{ ), and want to cover up, but it’s a fine balance on just looking frumpy!  So…my usual rule of thumb, is if you are going long and loose up top, go tight on the bottom!

Leather Jacket + Blanket Cardigan + Skinnies + Booties…the perfect travel outfit.

So, I’m going to see just how long I can make my titles haha.  I could have titled this “What I wore on the airplaine”, but that sounds so boring.

I know that I’ve been posting less “adventures” lately, but…let’s be real.  It’s super hard to lug a tripod and my camera along on our adventures now that Maya is really adventurous!  And it’s been COLD.  And we aren’t really that used to the cold, so playing in the upper 30’s with 20+ mph winds has not been too fun.

I’ve been reminded over this past holiday season how much I love to dress up, and put thought into my outfit.  I’m thinking that as Maya is in school more, that might be the direction of this blog a few days of the week.  Thoughts? Blog BCBG Oober Swank J Brand Aquatalia-1 Btw…I realized later after I scored these booties on eBay for 90% off that these booties are weatherproof!!!  Say, what?  Accidental SCORE!!!  They were perfect for the airport, because they easily slip on and off, and were actually quite comfortable!Blog BCBG Oober Swank J Brand Aquatalia-2 Blog BCBG Oober Swank J Brand Aquatalia-3Once she saw the neighbor boys out playing, so wasn’t cold at all haha. This jacket was one of them.  I had gone into a thrift store after a shoot in a neighborhood that is about 30 minutes from my house.  I saw this jacket.  LOVED IT.  I think it was $15.  AT this point, I can’t remember, but for me.  As much as I thrift and find amazing things, $15 is too much.  But it was AMAZING.  SO well made, and purple…Maya’s favorite color at the time.  So, I texted my thrifting buddy who lives a few miles away and said “IF…you happen to go, AND if it happens to still be there…I WANT THIS JACKET!”  Lo and behold.  STILL THERE!  Sadly, she has a daughter Maya’s age, so it was especially painful for her to buy it for me, but…I’ve made it up to her 🙂  She wore it all last year, and it still fit this year too!  BEST $15 spent ever!! 🙂Blog Mini A Ture Jacket Chaco Belyn Boots-4And these boots???  SO CUTE!  And…$4.20! When I shoot around our neighborhood, chances are…my neighbors are walking by-awkward!!  Except my actual neighbor, who knows what I’m doing, and knows…just keep doing what YOU’RE doing!  More often than not, I get really cute pictures of Maya and her boys, so it’s all good. Well, in a few of the above shots, I may have removed my neighbor playing ball with her boys 😉  Oh, and the wind…was once again, out of control.  Everyone thinks that Seattle is all about rain, but when you live near the water…it’s all about the wind too!Blog outtake

Playing in the snow! Kind of… ;) + Tutorial of how we take our own pictures.

I’ve been so jealous of everyone’s snow pictures!  We could easily drive about 45 minutes and see LOTS of it, but I’ve still been working Saturday and Sunday this whole month, so finding the time hasn’t happened yet.  Imagine how excited we got when we looked outside on Sunday and saw SNOW FALLING!!!  Sadly, it didn’t stick and you can barely see the flakes, but it was still pretty exciting 🙂

Fair warning…this blog post is a liiiiiittle bit longer than usual.  The Huz bought me a wireless shutter release for Christmas last year.  I’ll admit, I thought it was too big, and never took it out of the box/took the time to learn how to use it.  Well, I finally took it out to take our most recent family pictures a few weeks ago, and I LOVE IT!!!  I only wish I’d figured it out sooner.  More behind the scenes and links for tutorials in the “keeping it real” at the end of the post!

To keep Maya interested, I gave it to her and had her take my pictures.  She took 33 pictures in 22 seconds hahaha.  She thought she was being sly by running down the sidewalk and turning her back to me  😉Blog HM Hat Vintage Fishermans Sweater DL1961 Emma Bloom Sorel Tofino Boots-1 Blog HM Hat Vintage Fishermans Sweater DL1961 Emma Bloom Sorel Tofino Boots-2 Just imagine hearing, click, click, click, click, click haha.Blog HM Hat Vintage Fishermans Sweater DL1961 Emma Bloom Sorel Tofino Boots-3I grabbed it from her and got these.  Just know that of all these I’m posting, there are about 4 times as many more that I wanted to post! Statement Jackets! Buffalo Plaid + Stripes do mix, right? :)

The best part of a statement jacket, in my opinion is that you can usually keep everything else basic and let it stand on it’s own.  I didn’t happen to do that in this case though, haha.  We took my parents out for dinner to thank them for watching Maya while I went to Austin with the Huz, and I felt like getting a little festive.  I mean, any reason to dress up, and I’m “GAME ON!!” 🙂

You can never go wrong with stripes!  At least, I don’t think so.  I wore a pair of faux leather leggings to keep me warm, and threw on a pair of Frye boots that I’ve had for 6-7 years.Blog Elliot Lauren Buffalo Plaid Silence Noise Striped Dress Frye Fiona 3 Strap Boots-1 Blog Elliot Lauren Buffalo Plaid Silence Noise Striped Dress Frye Fiona 3 Strap Boots-2Oh, and this jacket?  Random eBay add on purchase last year to get combined shipping for….$2.80!!!

Silk Top + Flares for a holiday or NYE Outfit

So, I never posted what I ended up wearing to the Huz’s holiday party.  I had option one (Silk Romper + Booties) and two (All Black!) all lined up, but they both got vetoed in the end.

I ended up going with this one, because it was a little warmer, more comfortable, and could go be seen as somewhat casual yet also dressy since I wasn’t completely sure what others would be wearing.  There were people more dressed up and also more casual at the party, so I was super thankful I went this route.

I never end up getting pictures on the nights I go out, because usually I get ready 20 minutes before we leave.  Then, there’s no time and it’s too dark!  So…I threw on this outfit again when I happened to have day 2 of straightened hair. 😉

It was a WINDY day, and I had about 5 minutes, in an alley a block away.  Such is life…

Family Pictures…didn’t think they were happening for 2015

And then…a holiday miracle was bestowed upon me!!  My brother decided to come up and visit this last weekend, and it was pretty much instantly decided between me and my mom-FAMILY PICTURES!!!

We had all been to Maui over the summer for my parents 45th wedding anniversary (a couple posts can be seen here and here), yet due to all the various activities with 3 families the only picture we got of ALL of us was one taken by a waiter at one of our family dinners :{  I even brought my tripod!!!  It never saw the light of day though…sigh.

And don’t get me started on my immediate family.  With a teenager that works while also taking college courses, another teenager who is in high school and sports year round, a husband who travels half the week, and me who works on the weekends…oh, and rainy Seattle.  Our family pictures had just fallen by the wayside this year…

I’m still not getting my act together to send out a CARD this year, and I’m trying to still absolve myself of that.  I could send a Happy New Year’s Card, and honestly, I made one up.  BUT…there’s still the addressing and stamping, and I’m still behind on so many client’s stuff, so…this year.  It’s not going to happen.  My one big guilt is that I don’t have a massive way of telling people.  Not many of my friends or family know about this blog and Facebook is sporadic at best on sharing, but…so be it.  I’ll try and do better next year.
OH, AND!!!
You guys…for those new to the blog.  THIS happened last year, so honestly, my bar was set pretty low hahaha.  I can laugh about it now… Maya is super happy and chill as long as she doesn’t realize “PICTURES ARE BEING TAKEN!”  And, since I take most of our images with a self timer and tripod, or while she’s playing- she doesn’t get it.  Thankfully, I have a solid knowledge of Photo Shop, and took a butt tone of pictures to make sure we had ONE good image, yet…the stories are priceless.

Comfy Everyday Play…

I’ve posted a few holiday looks recently, but let’s be real, those aren’t the day to day!  Most of you know our day to day, but as a refresher-this is it.  Me=hair in a bun, my parka, a sweater, jeans, and Converse.  And with the COLD and WIND that we’ve been having, along with the torrential downpours, we haven’t been playing outside for more than 20-30 minutes at a time.  Which means usually running around our neighborhood when we have a break in the weather.

Flannel + High Rise Straight Leg Jeans + Booties // Trinity Tree Farm

A week ago Friday, Maya and I met some friends up at the Trinity Tree Farm. We had gone there to get a pumpkin and play in the bouncy houses last October, and Maya loved it!

As a family, we’ve been so ridiculously busy and overbooked that I knew there was a slim chance of us all going to get a tree together.   So, I decided to take Maya and make a play date out of it!

And….what do you wear to a tree farm? A flannel and boots, duh! 😉blog-oxford-trunk-frame-denim-cafe-noir-trinity-tree-farm-1 Blog Oxford Trunk Frame Denim Cafe Noir Trinity Tree Farm-2 Blog Oxford Trunk Frame Denim Cafe Noir Trinity Tree Farm-3

Maya of course fell asleep 5 minutes before we got there, and I didn’t have the heart to wake her up. Instead of chopping down a tree, I picked out one that was all wrapped up already in their already cut section.  All while Maya slept in the car.  Best laid plans….

Finally, I decided to wake her up, and we just ran around and had fun with our friends. I wanted to get some pictures of my friend with her kids in the midst of all these trees. Maya was still a little groggy from her partial nap, and didn’t want me to put her down. So…as she’s hanging off my back, I took a few of my friend. I can’t imagine how ridiculous we looked to anyone watching haha.  But, I got some super cute ones of them.  She then strapped her youngest in a carrier while her daughter ran around, and took a few of me and Maya 🙂 #momlife
