Nausea remedies

After a rough weekend having eating something that didn’t sit well with me, I was racking my brains for foods are helpful when dealing with nausea. There have been some bad stomach bugs going around this winter, I occasionally get gluten contamination which gives me a stomach ache, and this weekend I was also reminded of my pregnancy with my first child when I suffered from extreme, debilitating, nausea for about 34 out of the 40 weeks. (No more babies for me, but my heart goes out to any woman dealing with morning sickness!) I’ve compiled some tips in hopes that *something* sounds good or may help another mom or little tummy!

lemon blog

At the peak of my morning sickness, I would chop up lemons and rub them on my arms and neck. May sound crazy, but it worked to take the edge off, at a time when nothing else did!

  • BRAT diet offers simple and easy digestible foods: Banana, Rice, Applesauce, Toast (can be gluten free!). Grated apples can also help an upset stomach.
  • Ginger is known to settle stomachs and aid in digestion: try making ginger tea from fresh grated ginger, dry ginger powder, or eating a piece of candied ginger
  • Clear broth – beef, chicken or vegetable broth can give some nourishment and calories
  • Chicken soup – if you are paleo and you see BRAT and think “carbs and sugar”, you may at some point tolerate and prefer some (fresh) chicken soup – protein, cooked veggies and broth are easy to digest!
  • Avoid dairy and foods that are very rich and harder to digest
  • At the peak of my morning sickness I could not stand the sight or smell of any food. Some days I ate sour gummy worms and would chop up lemons and rub them on my arms and keep them by me – smelling lemon took the edge off of the nausea

Wellness for cold and flu season here!

Stay well, be happy, and take care!

Taco Seasoning

Tired of scrutinizing the ingredients of packets of taco seasoning in the grocery store? Here’s the good news! You may already have many of the spices in your cupboard. If not, head to the bulk food or spice section and pick up some spices for this super easy DIY taco seasoning. When you are ready to make your tacos, simply cook meat and add seasoning with a little water till you reach desired flavor!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1-2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons paprika (or 1 1/2 teaspoons hot smoked paprika)
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Put all of the ingredients in a small jar and shake to combine.  Store in an airtight container for up to 1 month.

Yield: 1/4 cup+

Marzipan “Strawberries”

I made marzipan “strawberries” for Valentine’s Day this year. They are a fun and festive and really a super cute dessert to make any season! The kids made marzipan snakes, but those snakes were eaten faster than I could take a picture! Next time. 🙂

Create a batch of marzipan by following the instructions here and substitute some beet juice for egg white. It really is that simply, but I realize that may seem a bit ambiguous. Here’s what I did. I cleaned and peeled some beets, put them in a pot of water to boil and when done set beets aside to cool and saved about 1/8 cup of the beet juice. Then when mixing the marzipan I added beet juice a tablespoon at a time to get the desired color pink. If your marzipan gets too runny, add some more almond meal and sugar and then work with the dough to get desired consistency and color. Note that marzipan will firm up overnight as well. So make a batch, wrap it in plastic, and then make your confections when you’re ready to do so! We are going to make marzipan “oranges” (and more snakes!) next, so stay tuned for that. 🙂

The stems are tomato vine stems! And after making these strawberries, dipped them in chocolate. Recipe included in instructions above.

Papaya Avocado Smoothie

Here’s my latest smoothie crave. Papaya, avocado, coconut milk, and lime! It was rich, creamy and delicious. The only thing that wasn’t great was the color. As you might know from painting, that’s what you get when you mix red (papaya) with green (avocado)! But who cares right?

Happy Thursday! 🙂

Ingredients

  • 1/2 papaya
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup (or more) water
  • 1 tsp (or more) honey (optional)

Directions

  • Combine ingredients
  • Using a blender or inversion blender mix ingredients adding more water as needed
  • Enjoy!

Hasty Pudding

My daughter Ava and I have been reading Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the Prairie. She LOVES the books, her first real “big girl chapter books” and loves hearing about the stories from that time that seems so long ago. We talk about the Ingalls family, and the Spartan living compared to our life today.  “Can we give Laura some of my toys?” asked Ava. Melt my heart!

In one of the chapters, Ma made Hasty Pudding. There are a bunch of recipes online and I’m sure there are many variations, but in the book they described it as a cornmeal porridge with some maple syrup and butter. So that’s what we made! Super fun kid experience to watch and learn and super yummy! 🙂

hasty pudding blog (2) hasty pudding blog (1)

Ingredients

  • Cornmeal
  • Water
  • Butter
  • Maple syrup

Directions

  • Corn meal package should have instructions for quantities and cook times. I usually make a larger batch, about 1 cup cornmeal + half a large pot of water. I realize that’s not very helpful, but it’s one of those things you’ll need to check based on how finely ground your cornmeal is.
  • You can adjust water to make it thicker or thinner
  • Serve with butter and some maple syrup
  • Enjoy! 🙂

Blackfish Cafe Coleslaw‏

This coleslaw is not only colorful and beautiful, it is delicious! The fresh ginger, minced fresh garlic and sesame oil make this dressing totally yummy. Add some roasted chicken and mandarin oranges and call it a meal! 🙂

Salad:

  • 6 c. Napa cabbage (about one head, thinly sliced). (Used regular cabbage as could not find napa cabbage in season when I made this.)

  • 1 c. radishes, thinly sliced
  • 1 c. green onions, thinly sliced
  • 4-6 ounces sugar snap pea pods (slice diagonally)  (I substituted green pepper.)

Dressing:
  • 3 T sugar (I used 1/2 that)
  • 3 T white wine vinegar
  • 1 T soy sauce

 Directions
  • Prepare salad
  • Mix salad ingredients
  • Toss and serve and enjoy! 🙂

Munchery

People ask me, “How do you do it all”? First of all, everyone has a different definition of “all”, and second, I’m not trying to do anything extraordinary, just be a good mom when I’m with my kids. I work fulltime outside of the house and while it’s busy and tough sometimes, I wouldn’t change anything. I do love to cook, but very often and recently I’ve come to rely on my personal “chef” who makes delicious, healthy meals.. enter.. Munchery! 🙂

I need to clarify something here. Munchery did not sponsor this post and they actually don’t know I’m writing about them. But I will say this. When you’re at work and it’s 3pm and you have no idea how you’re going to get dinner ingredients gathered, put together and on the table at a reasonable time, Munchery pre-cooked meal delivery service is pretty amazing. It “saves me” several times a week! And yes, I call it my personal chef. 😉 They have gluten free options, and I’ve found a bunch of personal favorite dishes (e.g. Seared Salmon and Pine Nut relish, Shrimp Remoulade Salad, Roasted Poblano & Mushroom Tacos, and more). They also have great kid options.

Here’s a little coupon for you, and hopefully they deliver in your zip code. If not, hopefully coming soon!

Shown below is one of the kid options: chicken and mashed potatoes! Comes with some fruit and a toy. 🙂

Sweet Potato Hash with Spinach and Eggs

Good morning! Sweet potatoes, sausage, egg and greens tossed in a skillet makes an excellent breakfast. There are a few steps, so this is a great weekend breakfast to make during that first cup or two of coffee. 😉 Paleo, gluten free, and wonderful served with fresh fruit or berries!

yam spinach egg hash blog (3) yam spinach egg hash blog (2) yam spinach egg hash blog (1)

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons high-heat oil, divided
  • 1 pound fresh sausage (optional)
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 pounds garnet or jewel yams, or sweet potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
  • 1 bunch spinach or kale, tough stems removed and leaves chopped
  • Salt, black pepper, and/or red chili flakes to taste
  • 4 eggs

Directions

  • Heat 1 tablespoon oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage (if using); crumble and cook until no longer pink. Add onion, garlic and cook until onion is soft, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove mixture from pan.
  • Heat remaining oil in skillet and add yams. Cook until golden and tender, stirring occasionally, about 20 minutes. Return sausage mixture to the skillet. Stir in spinach or kale and toss with potatoes and meat. Now, using a spoon, make 4 shallow indentations in the hash and crack 1 egg into each indentation. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and cook until whites are set, 8 to 10 minutes. Serve immediately.
  • Enjoy!

Thanks PCC Natural Markets for the inspiration (modified and shortened recipe from the original and it was still great)!
