Staying fit over the holidays…

I’ve been wanting to do a post about this for so long…

Honestly, fitness and exercise is more of our daily life than anything else we post about!  BUT…in my mind, I wondered who wants to read about that?  Um…Ok,  A LOT OF PEOPLE!

So, I thought I’d tell how I stay fit.  As a mom… As someone who is 40 and beyond… It’s different now, but I’ll try and share universal thoughts.

It’s also super important for me that some form of exercise is part of Maya’s daily life too, so…my number one tip?

  1. Get outside and be active with your kids!  They need it and love it, and you are having quality time with them while keeping you both healthy!  Go for a long walk around your neighborhood.  If you live near any hiking places, go hiking (a post from a hike we did a while back coming soon!).  Even in the colder rainy temps, layer up!  I have this set for Maya, and we layer it under everything.  If she gets too hot, we just peel the layers off!  Lately, it’s been HER pushing me to run more!  She will say “C’mon mom!!  You can go faster than that!  You can do it!!  (Video Here :))
  2. Make a date with a friend or family incorporating exercise instead of food!  This is good for a couple of reasons.  If it’s raining or cold, it’s easier to just want to curl up with a book, but if you have someone counting on you to meet them, you are more likely to get out there.  Instead of meeting for drinks/dinner.  Meet a friend for a walk or run!  Don’t get me wrong.  I want to get out there and have some drinks with my friends, BUT…it can add up both monetarily and calorically. And, honestly, most of the time I don’t want to take away from family time at night.  I have friend that I’ve been meeting every Monday for a 3 mile walk through the hills of our neighborhood.  We get exercise, but we also get to have some weekly quality time together and uninterrupted conversations-double win!  I know that isn’t a possibilty for moms that work 9-5 jobs, but you could make it a Sat or Sun morning date!  Maya and I also meet up with my parents every Sunday morning for a walk.  Lately, Maya has been running more, so we don’t get as much quality time with them, but it’s still better than nothing!  If you have kids, working out with your spouse can be harder, but you could absolutely make it a family affair!  With a stroller or once they are able…bikes!
  3. Join a class.  Can you tell I find the easiest way to hold myself accountable is using others-haha?  There is an outdoor bootcamp that I do through my local YMCA (more on THEM later!!) . I’ve made some good friends just from going there every week, and it’s SO nice having someone else forcing me to do things I’d never do on my own!  And there are SO many classes offered at your local gyms!
  4. Find an App you like!  There are so many apps out there for exercise!  One of the things I’ve found challenging about some apps is that I have to stop what I’m doing to look at what they are doing next.  OR…in reality, my eyesight is so bad that I have to have it in my face to see what they are doing.  It’s great once I get the routine down, but not so great for new exercises.  One app Aaptiv talks to you and plays customized music tailored to your tastes!  They have programs for running, treadmill, elliptical, Indoor Cycling, Stair Climber, Strength Training, Stretching, Yoga, Walking, Meditation (I’ve SO been meaning to try this!!), Race Training, and more!  It’s great if you only have a few minutes at home or aren’t able to meet someone else or make a class at the gym, because you can do a lot of the things outdoors or at home!  AND…they have a 30 day free trial!
  5. Join a gym with good daycare-find a YMCA if you have one near you!  Ok, this might sound obvious, and it is.  BUT…when you are a mom, finding a gym with good child care is absolutely the difference between going and not going sometimes.  I honestly should work for the YMCA, because I am one of it’s biggest supporters and tell every mom and dad I know to join-most do!   The salesperson in me hasn’t died ha!  Sadly, I don’t get paid for referrals, but I’m SO happy to give my friends happiness, and the YMCA is hands down been a life saver to my sanity and health.  The YMCA is SO catered to making sure your kids have fun, and if they are running around having fun/getting exercise, that means you can work out and TAKE A SHOWER guilt free!!  They have so many fun programs for kids and adults!  One thing you can do together is swim.  Maya and I go swimming every Sunday.  I tell her we have to stay in the deep end, which means she swims the entire time, and I have to tread water or swim the entire time.  Again…double win!
  6. Get a Kindle or listen to an audio book.  I used to not be able to work out without music, and I’m still a firm believer that it gives you a certain adrenaline boost that undoubtedly helps while working out.  However…I recently started reading while doing the elliptical, and it’s been a GAME CHANGER for me!  I LOVE to read, but once I had Maya I “never had time” . I felt too guilty sitting on the couch reading, so I was lucky if I read for 15 min at night before bed.  Now, I take my Kindle to the gym (or you can do the Kindle app on your phone if your eyesight allows ha!), and I’m reading again!  It’s such a nice escape!  Sometimes I’ll stay on extra long or go sit on the bike after if I’m at a good part in my book!  I’m sure the same would apply to audio books, but I just haven’t tried them yet.  Audio books would be GREAT for outdoor running or walking!
  7. Buy some cute/weather appropriate workout clothing.  Ok.  I know that the cute part might sound silly, BUT…whatever!  When I have cute work out gear, I feel better!  Oh, and if it’s flattering and sucks you in….EVEN BETTER!  It might sound gross to some, but I still buy all my work out gear at thrift stores or eBay.  Wash it on “sanitize” mode, and get over it!!  You get it at a fraction of the cost, and you feel and look great!  I get Lululemon pants for sometimes less than $10!  My average is less than $20!  Average for a jacket is $25!  And let’s be honest…there’s some CUTE workout gear out there now!!  SO…if you happen to wear it all day (I mean…I miiiiiiiight on occasion! ;)) you still feel cute!  Same for kids!  I said before, but I get Maya North Face jackets all the time for less than $10, and on eBay, I’ve been scoring her Ivviva (Lululemon’s kids line) for $10 or less.

I can add to this later, but would love to hear ideas that you have for staying fit!

On me…

Top- Lululemon (thrited for $14, similar here)
Pants- Lululemon “In the Flow” ($15 on eBay, similar here)
Shoes- New Balance “Fresh Foam Zante” (purchased through Joe’s New Balance)
On Maya…
Jacket- Ivivva “Live to Move” ($8 on eBay, but similar here)
Pants- Ivviva “Rythmic Crop” ($10 eBay)
Shoes- New Balance (thrifted, but similar here)
Keeping it Real…
It should first be noted that we took these pictures AFTER our actual morning walk.
Had I taken a shower…nope.
I’d always imagined I’d take these pictures with a perfectly curled pony tail, and I wouldn’t be in the midsts of my stress eating/drinking super busy work time, but…let’s be real.
SO…I put on a pair of Lululemon compression leggings.  Which they don’t seem to offer anymore??!!!  TRAGEDY!  Do yourself a favor and eBay “In the Flow” and BUY A PAIR!  They look so bizarre not on, but they are AMAZING!  High rise to suck you in all over!
Um, never mind.  This is just me normal…
😉
So….while we do go for walks/runs every Sunday, I don’t bring my camera!  I take lots of iPhone pics of our walks usually documented in our Instagram Stories!  The other day we went BACK out after our walk and just grabbed a few pics with the tripod (shown above).
Here’s a hilarious video of the timer going off surprising us, and us just running back and forth hoping to get a shot or two haha.  It should be noted that it was warmer in the morning when we took our walk, and then went down to 45 degrees later when we took these.  SO…it was a get it in one try shoot!  And…I love the shots we got!!  Honestly, we are usually running and laughing anyways, so it’s a totally true depiction!
Here’s us turning around for another go!  Not even remotely in focus, because I had set the focus point way ahead of this, but…who cares!  I love it!
Here’s a few iPhone pics from the past few Sunday’s walks.
She literally says all the time that she wants to start a dog walking business.  She literally stops for every dog “Can I pet your dog?”  FYI…this is not our dog!
haha!  We meet a lot of nice people… 🙂
Oh, and btw, this is the jacket Maya was wearing above.  It was the same day, but the jacket is reversible!
When the tide is out, we go down and play on the beach.
FYI, North Face Jacket, Ivviva Pants, and Puma Sneakers all thrifted… Another compelling reason to get outside…this view!
Oh, and she’s wearing the 32 degree top here AND a REVERSIBLE Patagonia down jacket that was….$2.50!!!  WHAAAAAT?!  It had some stains, but a night in Oxyclean, and one side is now stain free!   The other side has a stain under an arm!
Even in the rain.  REI rain jacket…less than $5 at the thriftstore!  Sadlly…the shoes aren’t waterproof, but also thrifted, so…
And yes, she usually brings along a toy, and YES, she rain with this!!

Leather Jacket + Cashmere Button Back Sweater | Night out

As we head into the holiday season, it’s time to think about more outfits that can take you from day to night.

There are always a bunch of semi casual events over the holidays.  Whether it’s drinks with friends, or a holiday party at someone’s home.  It’s hard to know just how dressed up you should get!  My go to is a cashmere sweater, black pants, and booties.  Cashmere can be dressed up or down, and is soooooo comfy.  If someone was wearing a dress, I’d totally feel fine being in this.  Conversely, if some guests were just in plain jeans and a top, I wouldn’t feel too dressed up.  It’s the perfect middle of the road outfit, in my opinion.

On Monday I posted a “day version” of this outfit that simply swapped out the heeled booties for lower heel combat boots.

I also love the wide scoop neck that can be worn off the shoulder if you want!

or…pulled up for a more conservative look!
Love the back, of course 😉 I actually took the above shots AND the casual ones of just me in from Monday’s post in SIX MINUTES before I had to race to pick Maya up from school.  haha!

I came back to this spot with her right after school so I could get some of us together.  I actually forgot to post those with Monday’s post!  SO glad I did a follow up post, because I LOVE these shots!!! And, yes, I danced right out of the frame again… 🙂 On me…

Jacket- Doma (old, similar here)
Sweater- Feel the Piece  (eBay)
Jeans- DL1961 “Emma” in Riker (thrifted)
Boots- El Naturalista Duna N528 (thrifted for $7!!)
On Maya…
Jacket- Jean Bourget (thrifted, but similar here)
Top- Crewcuts by J Crew (thrifted, but similar striped top here)
Jeans- True Religion “Skinny” (thrifted, but similar here)
Shoes- Crewcuts by J Crew (thrifted, but cute ones here)

This path is on a VERY busy street near where I live.  A woman had walked by when I was setting up and we chatted.  Then….she drove by and waved.  Nope, didn’t feel like a nerd at ALL!!
haha. 🙂

Leather Jacket + Cashmere Button Back Sweater | Day

I’ve posted a lot of day to night series lately…

Tis the season to meet friends for drinks and go to holiday parties!!

As a busy mom, it’s SO helpful to find an outfit that can easily go from day to night, because I swear sometimes I have about 10 minutes to get ready!!  Am I the only one?  I’m thinking no!

I’ll show in a later post, how I take this look to “night”…

I’m sure you look at it and think?  NO…this is super casual, cozy, and comfy.  And it IS!!

But, it’s super easy to take comfy cozy basics and take them to a party! Cashmere sweaters are a staple for me, because they are SOOOOO comfy!

You feel like you are wearing your most favorite worn in sweatshirt, yet look like you put some effort into things! 😂 Oh, and if you think cashmere is out of your price range, think again! It’s one of my most favorite things to thrift! I scored this GORGEOUS $200+ sweater on eBay for less than $20!

If you know me, you know how much I LOVE the button back!! 😱😍😍
Funny story.  I shot the above shots as well as the “night” version in SIX MINUTES! hahaha.  Night version coming later!

I had to go pick Maya up from school, but wanted to take these pics before getting her.  I really wanted to get more shots, but…six minutes and people walking in the path talking to me…it didn’t happen.

Then…I grabbed Maya from school and we came back to get a few shots together!

Don’t you wish you could bottle up the joy of a child??!!

Wait for it… I can’t even…LOVE HER!!

On me…

Jacket- Doma (old, similar here)

Gingham + Distressed High Waist Crops + Chucks

How many have you have looked in your closet full of clothes and couldn’t find a single thing to wear?!!

I’m thinking ALL OF US!

It’s easy to just be overwhelmed, or sick of what you have, and just go shopping.  BUT…what’s even more fun is finding new ways to wear old things!

The top I’m wearing is actually a long tunic.  It normally hits me mid thigh, but I thought it would look good tied with these jeans.

The jeans?  They are supposed to be a baggie boyfriend jean, but the seller on eBay listed them the wrong size.  BUT…in fact, they were 3 sizes smaller!!  I only spent $7.50 on them though, and I kind of like them as a tighter high waisted crop! This was seriously the coolest sky!  It was super stormy and cold, and then the sun came out!

and, Maya LOVED this teeter toter!Little surfer in the making! Me living out my “Dirty Dancing” dancing on a log fantasies, because this is as close as I’m going to get haha. Reviewing her rock treasures…

We actually came to this beach for Easter one year to collect “Easter Rocks”.  Wow, THAT was a trip down memory lane!!  Gah, I love that I’ve kept these records!!! Inevitabley, wherever we go, there are dogs.  Maya LOVES DOGS.  SO…anything I want to do is cut short and then focused around the dogs.  Honestly, as long as she has fun, that’s all that matters! She threw the ball for this dog until it started pouring on us! I mean… Of course, he would come back and shake all over her!  Which…she loved 🙂

On the way back to our house, I saw the skyline, and the moody sky, and had to pull over!  SHOCKINGLY, Maya agreed to get out too! On me…

Top- J Crew (Old, LOVE this here)
Jeans- Current Elliott “Boyfriend Jeans” (3 sizes smaller than intended 🙂 (eBay)
Shoes- Converse (thrifted)
On Maya…
Jacket- Zara Kids (thrifted, but similar here)
Leggings- Hanna Andersson (thrifted, but similar here)
Shoes- Converse (thrifted)

I always get a little nervous with her balancing on everything haha.

White Boho Top + High Waisted Crop Flares + Leopard Booties

If there is one thing I’m pretty consistent about style wise, it’s that I love basics….with a twist or edge.

Really, this is a white top + jeans + booties + a crossbody purse…
And it IS!  But, I love the pirate style lace up to the top.  The destroyed raw hem crop flare… The LEOPARD PRINT booties….DYING when I found these! And a cross body purse is SOOOO refreshing after the ginormous “diaper-carry-every-snack-entertainment-toy-crayons-coloring book” purse you have to carry as a mom of a toddler.  You can easily throw it over your shoulder and carry the bare minimums-LOVE! I can’t even with these next two….

LOVE HER!!  And, I’m sure it doesn’t need to be noted, but yes, that is ALL HER! Up on our neighbors porch, and I’m like “GET DOWN!!”

Yet, it looks so graceful and posed…

Of course I took a pic!

haha. 🙂 “Who me?!” So, this was one of those warmer fall evenings, and ALL the neighborhood kids were out.  It is a miracle I got any shots of just us, because they all just wanted to play.

WHICH IS GREAT!!!

Except…ugh.  Can I just have 5 minutes??  And of course, they were all asking what I was doing with the tripod and camera…  Don’t mind ME!

haha.

Sooooo in between them all running around the block (genius parenting move!!) I got shots of myself! 🙂And then, Maya played Star Wars with ANOTHER set of neighbor kids that came out after the other ones went in for dinner! Don’t mess with her!!!  She’s got older brothers…

HA!!

On me…

Purse- Diane Von Furstenberg (eBay, similar here)
Top- See by Chloe (eBay, similar here)
Boots- Kimchi Blue (Thrifted for $7!!! sold out, similar here)
On Maya…
Romper- Art Room (thrifted, but similar here)
Clogs- Sven  Sling Strap Children’s Clog C/O

I need to start a hashtag….. #TheTimesiCutOffMayasHead 😦 . The problem with shooting with a tripod…
And…OMG, DYING!

Leather Jacket + Booties for easy Day to Night

I did a post on Monday about one of my go to “Mom” outfits.

Chunky knit + Ripped super stretchy (A MUST!!!) skinny jeans + Comfy Cool Tennis Shoe.

Again, I don’t think you need to change your style when you become a mom, but for comforts sake, you do need to make a few modifications when you are chasing your toddler around or keeping up with your active 6 year old!

BUT…it’s still fun to get a little more dressed up for a date night or mama’s night out!!  The one downside to being a mom is the lack of time.  Seriously, WHERE DO THE HOURS GO?!!  If I know I’m going out, I usually try and do an outfit that I can take from day to night easily to make getting out the door on time a plausible feat!

The easiest for me is to swap out the tennis shoes for a fun bootie and throw on a leather jacket.  I swear it can take a tee shirt and jeans to another level!  Or in this case…a chunky knit and jeans! True reason for these next two shots in the “Keeping it Real” section 🙂 I think a lot of people get intimidated by open back tops.  But, I looooooove them!!  Layer a tank under for the day, and show off your pretty lace bralette at night!  I honestly could go without a bra, but I love the peek of lace!

 On me…

Leather Jacket- Organic by John Patrick (ebay)
Sweater- One Teaspoon (eBay $5!, similar here and here)
Bra- H&M (old, similar here)
Booties- See by Chloe (eBay, similar here)
On Maya…
Top- Kate Quinn Organic (thrifted, but cute print here)
Keeping it Real…

How many bloggers out there feel like total nerds when people walk by or blatantly just watch what you’re doing with questioning looks as you take pics? 👀🙋🏼😂

Even more awkward because I take all our pics with a tripod! 🙈

There was a parking lot right across the street from this beautiful path and I happened to notice this guy just sitting in his car watching me. I only had 10 minutes before I had to pick Maya up from school, so I was rushing through pics and set ups. I froze when I first saw him, and then waved. He waved back and gave me a big thumbs up! 👍🏻😜👋🏻 Yes, I have a go big or go home ugly laugh…oh well. 🙂

Oversized Open Back Sweater + Ripped Skinnies + Leather Slip On Tennis Shoes

I often get questions about staying fashionable while being a mom.  The truth is…there is a level of comfort that is needed when you are chasing your child around, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fashionable.  It doesn’t mean you have to say good bye to your former pre-kid style…

For me, I still wear a lot of the same things…with a few tweaks.

Here’s one of my go to looks.

Chunky knit + Ripped super stretchy (A MUST!!!) skinny jeans + Comfy Cool Tennis Shoe.
My favorite part of this sweater is the back!!  I’ve talked A LOT about my love of an interesting back.  You can look nice and conservative from the front, but give a hint of attitude when you turn around!

Later this week, I’ll show how I took this outfit from day to night.

Hint-I lost the tank top 🙂 Thank goodness for a zoom lens!  I kid you not.  She ran REALLY far from me!  How many moms can relate?  Oh…all of you?? 🙂 Clearly she thought it was hilarious…LOVE!!
LOVE all these next ones.  I honestly could have posted at least 5 more, but had to reign myself in at some point!
I’ll be SO sad when I can’t pick her up anymore!!!  The laughs right in my face…the tight cuddles…and even her licks (kisses).  😉  On me…

Sweater- One Teaspoon (eBay $5!, similar here and here)
Bra- H&M (old, similar here)
Top- Bordeaux (old, similar here)
On Maya…
Top- Kate Quinn Organic (thrifted, but cute print here)
Keeping it Real…
Hahaha.  I swear the time she is most in the mood to “pose” is when I’m trying to set up the tripod and the focusing stand.  I don’t want her in the shot, which of course means she WANTS to be in it 😉
Oh, and it should be noted that this is a very popular biking path.  SO…we were constantly jumping out of the way!
These leaves though!!!!  SO worth it!
Every once in a while she makes a very agressive dive/fall.  At almost 50lbs, that isn’t insignificant!!  My face here…hahaha. And….Maya got control of the remote again ha! What a lot of our shots look like…

Military Utility Jackets + Stripes + Birkenstocks || Sunset on the beach…

Here’s another shoot from over THREE months ago.  We had happened to have a cooler evening in the beginning of July, and the Huz had to go out of town.

I decided to let Maya stay up a little past her bedtime, and we went to play on a beach and catch the gorgeous sunset.

SO glad I did!  We had the best time, and the sunset was amazing!!

We are supposed to have evenings in the mid 60’s this weekend, but I’ll be shooting other families at sunset time…

She almost gave me a heart attack running around and jumping from log to log! That sky though… Looooooooove this next one!! On me…

Jacket- Gap (thrifted for $7.50, similar here)
Top- Olivia Sky (Nordstrom Rack)
Jeans- Hudson “Collin Skinny Jeans” (thrifted for $6!)
Shoes- Birkenstock “Granada” (hand me down from my mom!)
On Maya…
Sweatshirt- Petit Bateau (thrifted, but similar here)
Top- Crewcuts (thrifted, but similar here)
Jeans- Hudson (Nordstrom Rack, similar here )
Shoes- Saltwater Sandals (thrifted)
Keeping it Real…
So….we didn’t exactly mean to catch the sunset.  We went down earlier at first, but as soon as we parked I realized I hadn’t put a card in my camera!!  I normally keep two cards in in my camera (after having one corrupt a while back!), but long story…took them both out-UGH!  I let Maya run around for a little bit, but then we ran back home (about 10 minutes away)  It was one of those days…
BUT…it all worked out for the best in the end, because it was a GORGEOUS night!
Maya’s face pretty much summed up my thoughts earlier though…haha.

Denim Jacket + Striped Top + Harem Pants! HELLOOOOO 90’s!!

Among the MANY things I said I’d never wear… 🙈

Harem Pants!

BUT, my first concert was MC Hammer, and he made them COOL for a hot minute in the late 80’s/early 90’s!

So…I guess it’s fate that I love them now! 😂😍

I mean….SO COMFY!!

And I pretend that they are flattering on days when skinny “ANYTHING” is not going to cut it… 😩🍷🐷 Sooooo, I know I’m sounding like a broken record, but I took these images TWO months ago haha.  We happened to have a cooler evening, so we layered up a bit.  Because of that I put it on the back burner for when temps did start to get cooler for real!

Oh, in reality, this whole blog has been put on the back burner.  I’m just trying to stay sane.  Right now that means spending time with the family, tackling my client work first, and if we have a few moments left over…taking pics for this blog.

I’ve got about 10+ posts that we’ve taken pics of, but no time to actually work on the blog posts!! 😦

I’m kind of getting a routine down that lets me have more time to work while Maya is in school, so hopefully I’ll catch up on everything soon!  Famous last words..

Those two dots in the distance are my dad and Maya 🙂 Our faces hahaha! She’s in heaven when he does this.  I feel like I’m going to vomit from dizziness just watching!

On me…

Jean Jacket- 3×1 thrifted for $10!!! (similar here retails for $300!!)
Top- Clu (eBay, similar here)
Pants- Theory (eBay, similar here and here)
Boots- Birkenstock “Granada” (hand me down from my mom-SCORE!)

Distressed Overalls + Bodysuit + Lace Up Booties

I’m sure that there is an age when it’s really not appropriate to wear overalls…

But I’m thinking/convincing myself that that age is a ways off… 😉 . Because, I love them!  I’ve had a love for them since the 2nd grade when Dexys Midnight Runners came out with “Come on Eileen” . And if you are too young to remember that song, then listen, and dance along!  All that to say… My love of overalls runs deep. 🙂

So, oddly enough this looks like a foggy day in Seattle.

It wasn’t.  It was during the wildfires that happened back in early September.  I remember thinking that it was overcast, so it was ok to wear overalls.  At the end of this, I was a hot sweaty MESS!

BUT…let’s just pretend it was a cool foggy October day… 🙂

She says all the time….

“Mom…no pictures!!”

But you know what… I’ll keep doing them.  Because once we are actually THERE…

This is what I get.  And as much as I love looking back at these over and over…

I have to think that she will too. Pretty sure she has the best laugh EVER! Oh, and this outfit?  Totally wish I could pull it off!!

Faux leather shorts…might be a thing of my past.

BUT NOT OVERALLS!!

haha. One of the things I’ve always loved capturing…

Her running towards me!!

LOVE!!!! When she was younger, it always ended in her knocking me over with a hug.  Now…she just runs on past…haha. SUPER MAYA!!!

On me…

Bodysuit- H&M (similar here)
Booties- Boden (thrifted, similar here and obsessing over these! )
On Maya…
Jean Shirt- Hanna Andersson  (thrifted)
Top- Tucker and Tate (Nordstrom Rack)
Faux Leather Shorts- GapKids  (thrifted, similar here)
Ballet Flats- Clarks (thrifted, similar here)
Keeping it Real…
UGH!!!  The thing about taking our pictures with a tripod and shutter release is that we take a bunch of shots before I even go back to look and make sure that I actually got the focus right and….we didn’t dance right out of the shot.  That is a very common thing.  Oddly, the thing I most complain about when I ask others to take out pic haha.
These next ones.  TOTALLY out of focus, and…while fun, not at all in the frame!  BUT…I love them!!!  In all their blurriness!!
Oh, and I kid you not.  I DID a LOT of pics in this non focused shot!!
Thankfully, I changed it up and refocused.  CORRECTLY!
